A Little History...

This traditional post & beam building was originally the stable and carriage house for the Globe Hotel circa 1836.   It was constructed with a stone rubble foundation and had stables on the ground floor with a hay mow on the upper level.  There was even an indoor well to water the horses….the building was never heated as it was a stable!

The building changed hands in 1934 and it became the original site of Evans Lumber.   One year later it was purchased by Malcolm Rorabeck and became  M. Rorabeck & Son Lumber.   Malcolm Rorabeck was a local building contractor who cut his own lumber and started to retail it from this site.  He was known for “the best kiln dried lumber between Toronto & Montreal.”

Ruth & Bruce Cooper have been the owners since the seventies until David & Nancy Cleave purchased the building in 2004.

The Cleaves and their crew of County craftsmen renovated the structure from top to bottom using products they sell right in the store.  They kept the original post and beam intact:  all the cedar post and beam you see are original 1836.

Renovators and Port Picton Homes moved here April 2005 showing our commitment to a strong retail downtown Picton and to “show off” what a little renovating can do.  Remember, this was a horse stable!

We think this building is unique, and we hope you think Renovators is a new and unique concept for home improvement retail.
